Assault suspect dies in custody

A 40-year-old man has died in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of assault.

The unnamed man was reported to police in Atkins Road in Brixton, south London, on Thursday.

He was held on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and public order offences. He fell ill at Brixton police station and was taken to hospital.

He died 90 minutes later. The man's death was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Investigators want to contact anyone who saw the bare-chested man in Atkins Road or Weir Road on Thursday night.
