Dutch child dies in school attack | Dutch child dies in school attack |
(about 2 hours later) | |
A boy of seven or eight has been stabbed to death at a primary school in the Netherlands.
Police said a masked man attacked the child in a classroom in the town of Hoogerheide, 150km (90 miles) south of Amsterdam, shortly before midday.
Police have arrested a suspect, but would not name him or say whether he was related to the child.
"The killer fled but police have now arrested a suspect," said police spokesman Willem van Hooijdonk.
"It does not seem that many children witnessed the incident," he told Dutch broadcaster NOS.
"As far as we can reconstruct it did not happen in front of a full classroom."
It was rumoured locally that the killer might have been related to the boy but police said they could not confirm or deny this.
Mr Van Hooijdonk said: "The relationship between the victim and the killer is still unclear. We are investigating that at the moment."
The school was evacuated after the incident, while a helicopter hovered overhead. |
