Dutch child dies in school attack Dutch child dies in school attack
(about 2 hours later)
A child has been stabbed to death at a primary school in the Netherlands, Dutch media have reported. A boy of seven or eight has been stabbed to death at a primary school in the Netherlands.
One report said a masked man attacked the child at a school in the town of Hoogerheide, 150km (90 miles) south of Amsterdam, shortly before midday. Police said a masked man attacked the child in a classroom in the town of Hoogerheide, 150km (90 miles) south of Amsterdam, shortly before midday.
It was unclear whether the child was a boy or a girl or how old he or she was. Police have arrested a suspect, but would not name him or say whether he was related to the child.
It was reported that police had arrested a man, that the school had been evacuated and a helicopter was hovering overhead. "The killer fled but police have now arrested a suspect," said police spokesman Willem van Hooijdonk.
"It does not seem that many children witnessed the incident," he told Dutch broadcaster NOS.
"As far as we can reconstruct it did not happen in front of a full classroom."
It was rumoured locally that the killer might have been related to the boy but police said they could not confirm or deny this.
Mr Van Hooijdonk said: "The relationship between the victim and the killer is still unclear. We are investigating that at the moment."
The school was evacuated after the incident, while a helicopter hovered overhead.
