Sir Bill Cotton, former controller of BBC One, has died.Sir Bill Cotton, former controller of BBC One, has died.
It is understood that he died in a Bournemouth hospital. His death was confirmed by his family, and it is understood that the ex-BBC chief died in a Bournemouth hospital.
Sir Bill, who was 80, oversaw some of the BBC's most popular TV shows in the 1970s, including Monty Python's Flying Circus and Morecambe and Wise.
He later became the BBC's managing director of television before retiring in 1987. He was awarded the Academy Fellowship by Bafta in 1998.
As well as being the BBC's head of light entertainment between 1970 and 1977, Sir Bill was also in charge of BBC One for four years.
