Two soldiers were killed and six others were injured on Friday in what military officials called a “tragic accident” at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. Officials in that Army installation’s public affairs office said on Twitter that two of the six injured soldiers were critically hurt. They said the accident involved “a military vehicle and a troop formation” but did not elaborate. Fort Jackson officials did not immediately respond to an email on Friday requesting additional information. In their tweet, officials said they would investigate the cause of the accident. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers we lost today and to the families of the injured,” said Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson, the commander of the United States Army Training Center and Fort Jackson. “They represent the best of our nation and we will endeavor to support all those affected through this difficult time.” South Carolina public officials, including the state’s attorney general, Alan Wilson, and Representative Joe Wilson, took to Twitter to express their condolences. Fort Jackson, an Army installation in Columbia, S.C., trains more than 40,000 soldiers each year, according to its website. Officials said they would not release the names of the deceased until after they had notified the soldiers’ families. |
