The 30-year-old man from Poole was struck on the southbound carriageway of the A338 Spur Road in Bournemouth at about 22:40 BST. He died at the scene. "I would also request anyone who may have been in these areas at the relevant time and may have dashcam footage in their vehicles to please contact us." Mr Gibbs's family issued a statement paying tribute to a "well-loved and respected son".
The road was closed overnight between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the Blackwater junction. Insp Matt Butler said: "We have specially-trained officers supporting the cyclist's family at this difficult time."
He appealed to trace witnesses who were in Verwood, Dorset, or on the A31 or the A338 between 21:30 and 22:40.
The Spur Road was closed overnight between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the Blackwater junction.
