Working From Home Successfully

To the Editor:

As self-employed small-business owners who work from home, we respectfully disagree with “Here to Help: How to Work From Home” (Sept. 19). Working successfully from home doesn’t take special apps, websites and arbitrary techniques; rather, it requires the same self-discipline necessary in any professional environment to accomplish tasks in a way that works best for you.

We have worked out of our home offices for the last five years, often against the backdrop of cable news programming and running washing machines while consuming multiple homemade cafe lattes all from our standing desks — and often in comfy clothing.

As is the case with millions of self-employed Americans, the main priority driving us is the work itself — ensuring that our clients get the materials they require, completing projects on time and meeting benchmarks for our small business.

Being successful at working from home doesn’t require a magic checklist of dos and don’ts, but instead a focused desire to perform and succeed. As more of us continue to leave the confines of an outdated brick-and-mortar office in exchange for a more balanced style of work-life integration, let’s not create superfluous requirements imposing more stress and less productivity.
