Version 0 of 1.

The parents of the teenager who died after a sand tunnel collapsed on him have said they have lost a "wonderful son" as a result of the tragedy.

Craig Owen, 16, from Brymbo, Wrexham, died after becoming trapped 5ft (1.52m) underneath several tonnes of sand at Cefn Sidan beach in Carmarthenshire.

Jayne and Ron Owen plan to celebrate their son's life in a funeral service on Tuesday.

They thanked everyone for their support over the past week.

Craig had been a week into a family holiday when the incident happened on Sunday.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at the beach near Burry Port but he was pronounced dead in hospital.

'Wonderful son'

In a statement his parents said they were grateful for all the support and messages of sympathy they have received and continue to receive.

The couple said: "We have lost a wonderful son but we are sure his memory will live on for a long, long time amongst his family, friends and everybody who came into contact with Craig.

"We ask that those attending the funeral join us in celebrating Craig's life and if some want to wear rugby shirts that is fine - Craig would love that".

The funeral service is due to take place at Pentrebychan crematorium at 1330 BST on Tuesday, where his father, Ron, has chosen Abide with Me as one of the hymns to be sung.

The other hymn will be All Things Bright and Beautiful. One of Craig's friends will read a tribute on behalf of all his friends and the Vicar the Reverend James Aylward will speak on behalf of the family.

All donations in Craig's memory can be made to the South Wales Air Ambulance.
