Trump to Speak About Shooting in Las Vegas Trump, After Las Vegas Shooting: ‘Our Unity Cannot Be Shattered by Evil’
(about 1 hour later)
WASHINGTON — President Trump plans to speak publicly on Monday morning about the shooting in Las Vegas that killed at least 50 people and left hundreds injured. WASHINGTON — President Trump conveyed a message of unity on Monday when he addressed the nation to share his sadness and offer prayers for those killed or injured in Las Vegas in one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.
Mr. Trump offered his “warmest condolences” in a Twitter post earlier on Monday, his only public comments so far on one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. The president was expected to speak at 10:30 a.m. “My fellow Americans, we are joined today in sadness, shock and grief,” Mr. Trump said, the morning after a gunman opened fire at a music festival in Las Vegas, killing more than 50 people and injuring hundreds more.
“It was an act of pure evil,” Mr. Trump said.
The president’s remarks about unity, made from the Diplomatic Room at the White House, came at a time when the president has seized on divisions over other issues.
“In moments of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one. And it always has,” Mr. Trump said. “We call upon the bonds that unite us, our faith, our family, and our shared values. We call upon the bonds of citizenship, the ties of community, and the comfort of our common humanity.”
Earlier Monday, Mr. Trump offered his “warmest condolences” in a Twitter post.
