England made a watchful start against Australia after winning the toss and electing to bat first in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. England's openers failed to capitalise on a watchful start against Australia after winning the toss in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.
Alastair Cook survived an edge off Glenn McGrath and hit the first four, while Andrew Strauss looked assured. Andrew Strauss lobbed Stuart Clark to mid-on for 14 an hour into the day with the tourists 32-1.
The tourists named an unchanged team, thwarting speculation they would pick Monty Panesar as a second spinner. The tourists named an unchanged team, thwarting speculation they would pick Monty Panesar as a second spinner.

1207: Bell plays uppishly at his first delivery from Clark before turning him away for a couple to get off the mark. 34-1
1204: WICKET England 32-1 (Strauss 14)Strauss has given his wicket away for the third time in this series, flicking Clark to Martyn at mid-on. An absolute dolly. Not clever Straussy - England had looked soooo comfortable. Bell next man in.
"I think the Aussies have missed a trick here in picking McGrath. I know he said he was fit to play, but I think this was a chance to unleash Shaun Tait." Jim Maxwell on TMS
1159: Strauss glides McGrath away for three to third man. Cook drives straight again, and again Lee makes a sprawling stop at mid-on. Single for it. Cook's technique is all about economy of effort - if he was a cook, he'd be Delia Smith rather than a Heston Blumenthal. Strauss gets one for a push into the covers. Players take drinks. 32-0
1155: Clark into the attack, which has looked pretty toothless in the first hour. Strauss turns him away for one. Cook is playing some lovely shots for no reward - Lee makes a typically athletic stop at mid-off. One from the over. 27-01155: Clark into the attack, which has looked pretty toothless in the first hour. Strauss turns him away for one. "Jonathan Agnew, crossing over to the ABC's commentary team, remarks on the proliferation of pink shirts in the box. His co-commentator Geoffrey Lawson, who may or may not be wearing one, informs Aggers that pink is in for Aussie men this summer." 1149: Cook shovels McGrath to leg for a single. McGrath serves up a half-bunger but Strauss can only find Clarke at point. Strauss then paddles Pigeon round the corner for one - he's making a concerted effort to roll his hands when playing the pull shot and it's working. 26-01149: Cook shovels McGrath to leg for a single. 1142: Fine back-foot drive for four by Cook, who's playing McGrath with some comfort at the moment. The Barmy Army are tuning up in the stands, looks like the fun fascists have let them sit together for this one. 22-01142: Fine back-foot drive for four by Cook, who's playing McGrath with some comfort at the moment. "If England are going to stand a chance of winning Strauss needs to get a good innings and England need a total of 3 or 400." 1138: Dreamy cover-drive from Cook and he gets three for it. It's a genuine oval in Adelaide, you have to give it some serious tap to get a straight boundary. Lee has got his dander up this morning and bumps Strauss, but the batsman leaves it well alone. McGrath has been on and off the field, looks like he's changed his boot. He doesn't look particularly happy to be honest. Have the Aussies made a ricket with his selection? That's probably going to blow up in my face... 18-01138: Dreamy cover-drive from Cook and he gets three for it. 1133: Cooky clips McGrath away for a single. I'm not saying Pigeon is looking ginger after his heel injury, but he's looking pretty medium-paced. 15-01133: Cooky clips McGrath away for a single. 1130: Lee, as Jack Lemmon once said of Marilyn Monroe, is like jello on springs as he bounces towards the crease, except with far smaller breasts. Bit of Hollywood fielding by Martyn at mid-off, stopping a run from Cook and doing a couple of roly-polys for good measure. Sketchy shot for four from Cook, reaching for one and getting a thick outside edge. First boundary of the day however. Cook gets one more for a nudge into the on-side. 14-01130: Lee, as Jack Lemmon once said of Marilyn Monroe, is like jello on springs as he bounces towards the crease, except with far smaller breasts. 1122: McGrath looking pretty pedestrian at the moment - high 70mph just about every delivery. But as we all know, there's always more to Pigeon's bowling than pace. A maiden, but there are no demons in this track. 9-01122: McGrath looking pretty pedestrian at the moment - high 70mph just about every delivery. 1118: Smashing straight drive by Cooky, but Lee stoops and stops well to save the run. Two runs for Strauss to fine-leg and he gets another for a tuck into the on-side. 9-01118: Smashing straight drive by Cooky, but Lee stoops and stops well to save the run. 1117: Strauss paddles a very docile delivery from McGrath round the corner for two - straight into the ground, maybe he's learning. He then pulls out of a shot mid-hook. McGrath finds the Strauss edge, but the ball falls just short of third slip. Anxious early moments for the Middlesex man. 5-01117: Strauss paddles a very docile delivery from McGrath round the corner for two - straight into the ground, maybe he's learning. 1110: Cook very nearly out. He attempts to pull his bat out of the way and almost glances the ball behind, but it bounces just in front of wicket-keeper Gilchrist. One from it and Strauss follows up with a tuck round the corner for a single. 3-01110: Cook very nearly out. 1109: What England need this morning is a Douglas Jardine. Pelham Warner, England's manager on the Bodyline tour, once said of Jardine: "When he sees a cricket ground with an Australian on it, he goes mad". McGrath shares the new ball with Lee Boy, and he's going round the wicket from the off. They reckon Cooky's susceptible to the ball angled in. He gets England off the mark with a single into the covers. 1-01109: What England need this morning is a Douglas Jardine. 1105: Lee bounces in...and his first ball is Harmisonesque, wide outside Strauss' off-stump. The second is also wide, and Strauss wisely lets it go. A maiden to start with, but no scares for Strauss. 0-01105: Lee bounces in...and his first ball is Harmisonesque, wide outside Strauss' off-stump. 1046: Players are out for the anthems. Not quite sure about all this, all seems a bit overblown for cricket. Warney and Pietersen side by side as they walk out - not much chat, that little tiff clearly hasn't blown over. A very presentable lady sings God Save the Queen - I'd like to kiss her. A chap called Guy Sebastien sings Advance Australian Fair, bit of reverb, Simon Cowell would have him on toast.1046: Players are out for the anthems. I think Monty's a better player than Giles, but spinners won't be a decisive factor on this pitch, it will be about the pace bowlers." Geoffrey Boycott on TMS"I hope McGrath breaks down. 1038: McGrath is fit for Australia so it's the same 22 players going head to head in the second Test. 1021: Morning ladies and gents and here's to a slightly less spirit-sapping second Test. However, the portents aren't good - I am still reeling from the news that England are unchanged. Yes, the XI that represented us so magnificently in Brisbane have been retained, meaning no room for Monty. I haven't seen the England dressing room yet, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a white flag fluttering from the window...1021: Morning ladies and gents and here's to a slightly less spirit-sapping second Test.
