A powerful 7.1 earthquake has struck southern Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor damaged buildings in the country's capital and caused several fatalities. More than 40 people have been killed after central Mexico was struck by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that destroyed dozens of buildings.

The quake’s epicenter was 8 kilometers southeast of Atencingo in the Mexican state of Puebla at a depth of 51 kilometers, USGS said. The central State of Morelos saw the most fatalities, with Governor Graco Ramirez saying on Twitter that 42 have died.
A civil protection official told local TV that the earthquake has led to fires in buildings across the City of Mexico, with some people trapped inside. The death toll for Edomex State stands at five people, said Governor Alfredo Del Mazo.

Puebla Governor, Tony Gali, said there only were “reports of is material damage” due to the earthquake.
“We have no reports of deaths so far,'” Gali wrote on Twitter, adding that the authorities will “continue reviewing” the effects of the disaster.
