Police investigating the attempted murder of a woman in central Glasgow last week want to speak to five people in the area at the time of the attack.

Officers said four men and a woman were seen on CCTV footage walking past the basement in West Campbell Street where the woman was found on 30 July.

The investigation saw 20 motorists and pedestrians stopped in the area between 0130 and 0630 BST on Wednesday.

The woman, who is believed to be a prostitute, is recovering in hospital.

Det Ch Insp Michael Feighan, of Strathclyde Police, said the overnight operation had been useful.

"Although there were not many people out and about last night, possibly due to the heavy rain, it was still a worthwhile exercise," he said.

"We will scrutinise the information obtained by those stopped who were all fully co-operative with the officers."

"Many hours of CCTV have been scrutinised and we are now in a position to appeal specifically to five individuals who were walking east on West George Street, past the basement where the victim was assaulted.

"The five comprised four men and a woman and one of the men was carrying a white jacket. They are possibly unaware that they may have seen something vital and I would urge them to come forward."
