A man charged with causing the deaths of a father and son in a motorway crash has been remanded in custody.

Gary Proctor, 47, and his son James, 16, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, suffered fatal injuries near Birch Services on the M62 on Sunday.

Imran Hussain, 31, of Como Avenue, Bradford, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, making threats to kill and driving under the influence.

The father-of-four appeared at Rochdale Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

An application for bail was refused by the magistrates and he is next due to appear before Bolton Crown Court for a plea hearing on 21 October.

Mr Hussein is said to have ploughed into the back of the Proctor's Fiat Punto as they travelled to Manchester Airport for a holiday to Florida.

He is charged with being more than twice over the legal drink-drive limit, and threatening a female BP petrol station attendant in Leeds.

Mr Proctor's wife and James's mother, Catherine, 44, was seriously injured in the crash.

She is currently in a stable condition in hospital being treated for broken ribs and a broken arm.
