A council changes its bin rounds from today - and expects to save 2,000 miles a month in fuel costs for its refuse lorries.

Wrexham Council undertook a review to improve efficiency of its bin collection service, with new housing developments across the county.

It means 60% of households will have their bin collected on a different day.

Council leaders said it would provide "an improved and efficient service to residents".

The council said its rounds had been operating at maximum capacity, with little room for expansion.

It believes by maximising the efficiency of the rounds, it can cut mileage of the bin lorries each day, saving 1,000 miles per fortnight and reducing the authority's carbon footprint.

Householders are being posted details of new collection calendars, while all general waste and recycling refuse will be collected from 4 August in the first week of operation.

Cllr David Bithell, lead member for environment and transport said: "These are important and necessary changes that will provide an improved and efficient service to residents.

"I know these changes may inconvenience some households during the changeover period and I would encourage everyone to check their calendars and stickers."

The council's chief environment officer John Bradbury added: "We ask residents to bear with us during this changeover period and thank them for their patience in advance. "
