A Newry businessman has been appointed as the Honorary Consul for Poland in Northern Ireland.

Jerome Mullen said it was important the Polish community was made welcome and "given the respect they deserve".

He said that he would set up an office in Newry, but overall responsibility for Northern Ireland will remain with the Polish Consul General in Scotland.

Mr Mullen, a native of County Cavan, said he was very honoured to receive the appointment.

"From the perspective of my position as Honorary Consul, the welfare of the Polish community here and the overall economic and social health of Northern Ireland go hand in hand," he said.

"I see my role as ensuring that the Polish community have full rights and opportunities under the law and that they have every facility to develop their talents for the betterment of themselves and their adopted country".
