Plans by former Labour ministers to set out a series of policy ideas make the lead for the Times.

According to the paper, Blairite ex-ministers, including Charles Clarke and Stephen Byers, are preparing to keep up the pressure on Gordon Brown.

The Independent says the "Blairite factions" believe Mr Brown has four weeks to save his political career.

It says they have issued a warning that he must return from holiday with a strategy to fix Labour's fortunes.

Rubbish supply

A government instruction imposing fines of up to £110 on householders who overfill their rubbish bins or leave them out too early is widely reported.

The Daily Mirror points out that it is harsher than the fine imposed on those caught shoplifting.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph reports that some householders do not appear to have anywhere to put their rubbish.

It says a surge in demand for bins in Germany and East European countries has resulted in the drying up of supplies for Britain from foreign manufacturers.

Holiday fever

The Financial Times says Gordon Brown is working with energy companies on measures to protect the poorest families from rising fuel bills.

But, the paper adds, he is expected to stop short of ordering a windfall tax on the energy industry.

The Daily Express also holds good news for hard-pressed families.

It says Britain's biggest tour operator, Thomson Holidays, is offering self-catering breaks in Greece and Turkey for seven nights for £14.

Medal rewards

Most front pages feature pictures of a tearful Michael Vaughan announcing his resignation as England cricket captain.

His predecessor, Nasser Hussain, writes in the Daily Mail that Vaughan has been a great captain and earned the right to go when he feels it is right.

And as British athletes head to the Beijing Olympics, there is news of the rewards awaiting the medal winners.

The Daily Telegraph says they are to be given a sports car, under a deal with the Italian manufacturer Fiat.
