Madness star Suggs and Scottish singer Sandi Thom are among the artists taking part in a nationwide busking event next month in aid of cancer research.

Running from 6 to 13 September, Busking Cancer will see bands, musicians and street performers from all over Britain raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

"Playing music is such a joyful thing - it's the soundtrack to our lives," said Suggs, who was born Graham McPherson.

"To do it to help anyone whose life has been touched by cancer is fantastic."

"Busking Cancer is fun, young and positive," added Thom, best known for her number one single I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair).

Tribute act

Other artists taking part include a Johnny Cash tribute act from Glasgow, pupils from an all-girls school in Marylebone, London and a circus performer from Rochdale.

The event - supported by Fender guitars - was launched last September near the London Eye.

"The launch last year was a storming success, so this year we are making it a nationwide event," said organiser Mark Warrick.

Suggs, who was recently seen in British film The Edge of Love, had a string of hits with Madness, including Baggy Trousers, Our House and House of Fun.
