A lifeboat crew has rescued a group of 20 people who got cut off by the tide in a river estuary. A lifeboat crew rescued a group of 20 kayakers who got cut off by the tide in a river estuary.
The group - believed to be canoeists - got into difficulties in the Porthmadog estuary in north Wales. The group of 18 young adults and two leaders dialled 999 after becoming trapped in a cove in the Porthmadog estuary in Gwynedd.
A rescue boat from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) station at nearby Criccieth was sent at 2145 BST. A RNLI inshore rescue boat from Criccieth was sent at 2145 BST and spotted their torchlights and the party were brought ashore unharmed.
An RAF helicopter was also sent to the scene but overhanging cliffs prevented an airlift so those trapped were taken to safety by the lifeboat. An RAF helicopter from Valley used its searchlight to help in the rescue.
