Version 0 of 1.

A patient has been arrested after barricading himself in a room at Borders General Hospital.

Police officers and a dog handling team were called to the incident at the site near Melrose on Thursday afternoon.

After negotiations failed, police broke down the door and used CS spray to help restrain the man.

Police confirmed a 55-year-old man from Edinburgh had been arrested and a report was being prepared for the procurator fiscal.

No other patients or staff were trapped in the unit during the 45-minute siege.

Sgt Helen Birrell of Lothian and Borders Police confirmed an arrest had been made.

Situation resolved

She said: "The threat to the public was our primary concern but no member of the public was at risk at any time and we are grateful for the cooperation of NHS Borders."

NHS Borders said only that there had been an "incident" at the hospital on Thursday.

A spokesperson added: "Lothian and Borders Police attended and the situation has been resolved.

"We are grateful to Lothian and Borders Police for their prompt attendance and assistance."
