Another soldier has been killed in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, Nato officials say.

He was struck by an explosion in an insurgent attack on Tuesday, officials from Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) say.

The nationality of the soldier has not been released, but Helmand - a Taleban stronghold - is where most British troops in Afghanistan are based.

Three British soldiers were killed in the same province in the past week.

"An Isaf soldier died of wounds from an explosion after insurgents attacked a convoy in Nahri Sarrj, Helmand, July 29," Isaf said in a statement. It gave no other details of the attack.

Isaf has around 53,000 troops in Afghanistan to help the government in its struggle against insurgents. It has lost nearly 140 soldiers in Afghanistan this year, according to a tally compiled by the AFP news agency.

Meanwhile Afghan officials say that a roadside bomb on Tuesday - which appeared to be targeted towards a senator mediating in a land dispute in eastern Paktia province - killed three policemen and wounded three others.

They say that the senator, Wakil Mohammad Laheq, escaped unhurt.
