Queen's University in Belfast is to formalise a research partnership with an eminent US university.

Vice-chancellor Peter Gregson is in Washington DC to sign an agreement with Georgetown University at a reception hosted by the British ambassador.

The partnership covers areas including cancer research, human rights, creative writing and post-conflict resolution.

One of Georgetown's most famous alumni, Queen's Chancellor Senator George Mitchell, is to attend the event.

Professor Gregson said it would be a "very special occasion in the history of both universities".

"The establishment of academic relationships across the Atlantic is a key feature of globalisation - Queen's developing relationship with Georgetown is the latest in a series of leading university partnerships," he said.

"This partnership will enhance research collaboration in key areas which will impact positively on life in Northern Ireland and around the world."

He said such partnerships "underpin wealth and job creation and make a significant contribution to quality of life".

In June, Queen's University embarked on a £28m recruitment programme across the world to attract 140 "high calibre" academics.
