A cat which travelled from Taiwan to Nottinghamshire in a shipping container full of polyester yarn is recuperating after his five-week journey.

Ginger, as he has been named by staff, was found by workers who took delivery of the container at Toray Textiles in Mansfield.

He is being cared for after losing weight on his 6,500 mile journey via Singapore and the Suez Canal.

An employee at Toray Textiles has offered to give Ginger a new home.

The cat will have to remain at the Nottingham International Quarantine Centre for six months to make sure he is free from disease.

Tough journey

Jane Whiteside, who is looking after Ginger at the quarantine centre, said he had a tough time.

"The conditions in the container were awful," she said.

"There would have been nothing for the cat to eat and he would have been drinking condensation off the container.

"It would have been very dark and wouldn't have been very pleasant at all."

Ginger is expected to make a full recovery.
