The shooting happened on Monday at about 1000 local time (0530 GMT) west of the town of Lashkar Gah, as UK troops patrolled alongside Afghan army personnel.
In a statement issued after the shooting, the MoD said: "The patrol received reports from locals that the Taleban were in the area but before they could take up defensive positions they received incoming fire, and the soldier sustained a single gunshot wound."
The soldier's battalion was attached to 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment.
