A teenage girl has been rescued from Lower Lough Erne after a wake-boarding accident.

The 14-year-old was brought ashore near Irvinestown after coming off a wake board late on Sunday night.

She was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast by a rescue helicopter.

Coastguard John Hope said that the child sustained spinal injuries when she came off the board, but was stabilised in the water.

"Fortunately there was a nurse on scene who provided first aid until we got all our rescue units on scene," he said.

"She managed to stabilise the 14-year-old girl and make her as comfortable as possible. We got her on-shore where the helicopter was waiting."

Wake-boarding is a water sport which involves riding a board behind a boat using a combination of water-skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques.
