A 35-year-old man has been shot dead outside an east London nightclub.

The victim, from west London, was hit outside Club Red in Cable Street, Limehouse, in the early hours of Sunday.

Police were called and he was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.

A man in his 20s was arrested when he voluntarily attended a police station. He is being questioned in connection with the inquiry.

Officers from the Met's Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime among London's black communities, are investigating the shooting.

A cordon has been set up in surrounding streets while forensic officers search for clues.

'Pretty terrifying'

A police spokesman said they believe the victim was at the club with friends prior to the shooting.

Local residents said they were woken by police sirens in the early hours of the morning.

Shop worker Gloria Antin, 45, said: "There was a helicopter and people shouting and screaming at about 4 o'clock.

"There were huge crowds of people here outside the nightclub.

"It's pretty terrifying but I'm not surprised. Every weekend we get trouble with people drinking outside the club."
