When two officers arrived at the scene, a car was seen driving away and one person got out before shots were fired. A gang of three men had raided the bank and were leaving when one of them got out of the getaway car, a silver Ford Mondeo, and shot at a police van.
The second officer was injured, but not by the weapon being fired, police said. The injuries sustained by both are not thought to be life-threatening. The male officer is being treated for non life-threatening facial injuries and his colleague, a female officer, is being treated for shock.
The officers were taken to hospital for treatment after the attack, which happened at about 0930 GMT on Wednesday. The officers were taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital after the attack.
An eyewitness reported hearing two shots being fired and seeing a policeman bleeding from his face and arm. It is not clear if the male officer's injuries were caused by pellets from the shotgun or shards of glass from the windscreen.
Greater Manchester Police said no further details would be released until the victims' families had been informed. Car abandoned
Police said two of the gang had gone into the bank and threatened staff with a shot gun, before stealing an unknown amount of cash.
The men left in a Ford Focus but swapped it for a silver Ford Mondeo just off Crown Lane.
The Mondeo had a false number plate, registration LM04 UTE.
The police van drew up behind the Mondeo, when one of the robbers got out and fired a shot at the windscreen of the van.
The Mondeo was later found abandoned on the Crawford Arms car park, which is on Red Rock Lane in Radcliffe.
Police said their officers were not armed and no shots were fired by them.
