A teenager from Derbyshire has died while on holiday in Greece.

Matthew Cryer, 17, from Killamarsh in North East Derbyshire, died last week on the island of Zakynthos.

It is thought he collapsed after a night out with friends in the beach resort of Laganas. His parents have been informed, the Foreign Office said.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said they were still waiting to find out results from the Greek authorities on exactly how the teenager died.

He added: "When Matthew is returned to this country then the matter will be put into the hands of Her Majesty's coroner."

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national on 21 July on Zakynthos, Greece.

"Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance."

Laganas, the largest resort on the island, is famous for its lively nightlife and attracts hundreds of young Britons every year.

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is part of the Ionian island chain lying off mainland Greece's west coast.
