Moors murderer Ian Brady was taken to a Liverpool hospital after complaining of being unwell, a health authority said.

Brady, 70, was taken from Ashworth High Security Hospital to Liverpool's Aintree Hospital on Friday, where he underwent several tests.

Merseycare NHS Trust would not disclose the nature of his illness.

Brady was convicted in 1966, along with his former lover Myra Hindley, of murdering Lesley Ann Downey, 10, Edward Evans, 17, and John Kilbride, 12.

He was transferred to Ashworth in 1985 and, two years later, finally confessed to murdering 16-year-old Pauline Reade and Keith Bennett, 12.

A spokeswoman for Merseycare NHS Trust, which runs Ashworth, said: "Ian Brady, a patient at Ashworth Hospital, complained of feeling unwell this morning [Friday].

"As a precaution he was taken to a general hospital where he successfully underwent a series of tests.

"He was discharged after about four hours and returned to Ashworth where he remains, having made a full recovery."
