Teenage girl charged with plotting UK terror attack with Isis fighter Teenage girl accused in court of plotting terror attack in UK
(about 4 hours later)
A 17-year-old girl has been charged with terrorism offences after allegedly communicating with an Isis fighter in Syria and arranging to receive weapons in order to conduct an attack in the UK, Scotland Yard said. A 17-year-old girl has appeared in court accused of plotting a terror attack in the UK.
She is also alleged to have received instructions on how to train and use weapons and asked for assistance in completing a plan, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2006. The teenager, from London, is alleged to have married an Islamic State fighter in Syria and to have arranged to receive hand grenades and a firearm in order to conduct the attack.
The charge follows an investigation by officers from the Metropolitan police’s counter-terrorism command. She is also accused of receiving instructions on how to use the weapons and asking for help in carrying out the plot.
She was previously charged on 12 April with acts in preparation contrary to section five of the Terrorism Act 2006 and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday in relation to these matters. It is understood she is alleged to have married the fighter with the terror group in September 2016 via an online service, Skype.
The teenager was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday. It is alleged the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was intending to receive hand grenades and a firearm, and intended to carry out a terror attack in the UK.
The allegations cover the period between 1 December 2016 and 12 April 2017.
At Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday, her lawyer, Vajahat Sharif, indicated that the girl would plead not guilty.
The girl, who spoke only to confirm her name and age, was wearing a Nike tracksuit and had long black hair tied in a ponytail.
District Judge Tan Ikram remanded her in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 11 August.
She will also appear there on the same date in relation to another terror offence for which she had previously been charged.
