Gov. Malcolm Wilson’s Bridge

To the Editor: Re “Like Vanity Plates for Pols” (editorial, July 1): You say the New York Legislature’s naming of the new Tappan Zee Bridge after Gov. Mario M. Cuomo “underscored the elevated self-regard of the political class.” Surely there are still some officials who understand that they are elected to serve the public. I disagree that Malcolm Wilson, my father, for whom the Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge was formally named, “barely left an imprint.” After 20 years in the New York Legislature, Malcolm Wilson made a lasting imprint as lieutenant governor through his ability to work with the executive and legislative branches, regardless of the party in control, enabling Nelson Rockefeller to accomplish many outstanding results as governor. Mario Cuomo recognized that history when he suggested that the Tappan Zee Bridge include my father’s name. State government built New York into the greatest state in the post-World War II era. Malcolm Wilson’s quiet competence was a significant factor. KATHARINE WILSON CONROYNEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. |
