(about 7 hours later)
US forecasters have issued hurricane warnings for parts of the Texan and Mexican coasts as Tropical Storm Dolly moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Dolly has grown into a Category One hurricane as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico towards the US-Mexican border, US forecasters say.
A warning is in effect from Brownsville to Port O'Connor in Texas and along Mexico's north-east coast from Rio San Fernando north to the US border. With winds up to 75mph (120km/h) Dolly is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, they say.
Hurricane conditions could be expected within the next 24 hours, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. "Preparation to protect life and property should be rushed to completion," the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami says.
Dolly is expected to reach land later on Tuesday or early Wednesday. It is the second of the 2008 hurricane season, the NHC says.
At 0900 GMT on Tuesday the centre of Dolly was located about 295 miles (475km) south-east of Brownsville, the National Hurricane Center said. At 2100 GMT on Tuesday the centre of Dolly was located about 165 miles (265km) south-east of Brownsville in Texas.
Maximum sustained winds were close to 60mph (95km/h). A hurricane warning remains in effect from Brownsville to Corpus Christi and along Mexico's north-east coast from Rio San Fernando north to the US border.
"Dolly is expected to become a hurricane prior to landfall," the NHC said.
