The First and Deputy First Ministers have met representatives of banks and other financial institutions to discuss the ongoing economic difficulties.

Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness met sector leaders at Stormont Castle.

It was the first in a series of meetings they are having to discuss the rising cost of food, fuel and other pressures on consumers and businesses.

They said they wanted to hear ideas for helping people and how the issue of mortgage availability may be addressed.

Mr Robinson said "growing a dynamic and innovative economy" was the top priority for the executive.

Mr McGuinness said rising prices and costs represented "an enormous challenge to everyone".

"While undoubtedly some of these issues are determined by global factors we, as political leaders, need to exercise what power we have to minimise the impact to communities living in poverty and aim to increase economic growth," he said.
