The driver killed in a collision with a vehicle being pursued by police in County Durham has been identified.

William Forrest, 52, of Walbottle in Newcastle, died on the A1(M) near the Bowburn interchange on Friday.

Police were attempting to bring a stolen Mitsubishi to a controlled halt when it crossed the central barrier and struck his Peugeot.

The Mitsubishi driver was treated in hospital but has since been released and is being questioned by police.

The 23-year-old man from Chester-le-Street, suffered facial injuries.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said the Durham force drivers acted properly during the incident on Friday morning.

Mr Forrest was the father of two grown-up sons and worked as a printer for a company in Darlington.
