An eight-year-old boy has been rescued from the River Teviot, in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, after getting into difficulties while swimming.

The alarm was raised by police just before 1800 BST on Friday when the boy was overcome by the cold water.

Firefighters used lines to wade out to the boy, who was clinging to a wall in deeper water.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said it had been a lucky escape as the river had swollen due to recent rains.

The boy was taken to Borders General hospital as a precaution.
