Two children aged six and 10 have been airlifted to safety with their mother after getting into difficulty while out walking on the north Antrim coast.

The police helicopter was sent out after the children's father raised the alarm at about 1145 BST on Friday.

They had been walking at the foot of cliffs at Fair Head, near Ballycastle.

A police officer was winched down and brought them to where the helicopter could land. No-one was injured but they were said to be shaken by their ordeal.

Brian Cairns of the PSNI's Air Support Unit, said: "The skilful flying of the pilot and his colleagues allowed for a quick and successful rescue and I would congratulate all those involved for their dedication and professionalism."

Police said the Coastguard assisted the family following their ordeal.
