Version 0 of 1.

The papers are in no doubt that Jacqui Smith has been forced into a U-turn over the proposal to make knife crime offenders visit victims in hospital.

The home secretary denied making the suggestion, but the Guardian says she earlier let the impression remain.

The Daily Telegraph says the situation has undermined the crackdown on knife crime. For the Daily Mail, it has brought confusion to government.

The Daily Express says it soon became clear the idea was a non-runner.

Holiday trouble

The Daily Telegraph reveals the prime minister will be spending his summer holidays in Southwold in Suffolk.

It points out that Gordon Brown will be hoping his break lasts longer than last year - that was just four hours, following the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

There is trouble in a very different holiday destination, the Maldives.

The Independent reports the that tourism minister has resigned over plans to lease 31 uninhabited islands for new resorts, amid ecology concerns.

Air view

The Guardian has a spectacular picture of the view over London taken from a passenger airship.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the UK's first commercial airship has started flights above the capital.

The 246ft Star Over London had perfect weather for its maiden voyage along the route of the Thames, the paper says.

The airship carries just 12 passengers at a time plus two crew - and it will set people back £360 for a flight which lasts an hour.

Shark snap

Almost all the papers have a picture of two surfers riding the waves off Florida - unaware that a shark is leaping out of the water nearby.

The Daily Express reports that it looked as if the black-tip shark was imitating the movements of the surfers.

As the Sun points out, it showed off its own fancy manoeuvres before disappearing in the blink of an eye.

Both the Sun and the Daily Mirror have the same headline - warning the surfers: "There's some fin behind you".
