It is not yet known what caused the fire, which is thought to be in the vicinity of a Jersey guest house on Mont Fallu. It is not yet known what caused the fire, which started in outbuildings near the Broadlands guest house in the Mont Fallu area of St Peter Port.
Fire crews and ambulances in the Jersey parish of St Peter are at the scene. There are no reports of injuries. It is believed gas canisters were stored on site, and they could be the cause of the explosions.
People are being led away from the scene by fire crews. Flights into the island have been suspended at the nearby airport.
Thick smoke is spreading over a wide area and planes into the island's airport have been suspended as the blaze is directly under the flight path. People are being led away, but there are no reports of injuries.
Emergency services have made a 200m (656ft) cordon around the area.
Chief fire officer Mark James said: "The fire broke out in the buildings surrounding the hotel.
"The airport has closed due to the close proximity of the fire and the amount of smoke.
"We are also evacuating the area as some of the buildings, which are mainly workshops, contain asbestos."
