A 78-year-old retired lecturer died after he was crushed by a caravan in his driveway, an inquest has been told.

George Owen of Upper Colwyn Bay, Conwy, was manoeuvring it using a device attached to the axle when the caravan rolled forward on a slight incline.

The inquest at Llandudno was told the tow bar went through his garage door, and Mr Owen was pinned against a wall. He died later in hospital.

North East Wales coroner John Hughes recorded a verdict of accidental death.

The inquest heard that it was not known why the 21ft (6.4m) Swift 480 caravan had rolled forward at Mr Owen's home.

He suffered multiple injuries and died almost three weeks later in Glan Clwyd Hospital.

The accident was witnessed by Mr Owen's wife Annie, who told the inquest her husband was moving the caravan to its normal position after a caravan holiday in Spain.

"I miss George greatly, I'm lost without him," she said.

The coroner told Mrs Owen: "It's been an awful experience for you.

"You had returned from a lovely holiday and everything was just perfect.

"On that fateful day your husband was attempting to do something he had done dozens of times before without mishap," he added.
