Police investigating the murder of a man with links to Scotland's criminal underworld have made a fresh appeal for information four years after his death.

Detectives said they have been disappointed with the poor response from people who knew Martin Toner.

His body was found on 13 July 2004 by a farmer in a field near the Renfrewshire village of Langbank.

Police said some of Mr Toner's friends and associates were known to them and may feel reluctant to come forward.

Mr Toner was due in court on drug trafficking charges shortly before his death.

He was last seen on Tuesday 29 June 2004 at about 1500 BST in Main Street, Langbank. It is not known why he was there.

He had been at the Key to Life gym in Ashtree Road, Pollokshields, Glasgow, earlier that day.

When Mr Toner was reported missing he was wearing a stone coloured zip-up top, grey tracksuit bottoms with a black side stripe and black trainers.

His mobile phone and training bag have never been recovered.

'Vital information'

Det Supt Bob Law, the officer in charge of the investigation, said the case would stay open until those responsible for his death were caught.

He said: "Martin Toner's alleged involvement in criminality has been widely reported previously and may be one of the reasons why there is reluctance on the part of some people to speak to police.

"I am in no doubt there are still people out there with vital information regarding this investigation who, for whatever reason, have still not come forward."

Det Supt Law said any information would be treated in confidence.
