Buchan, who had known her since school, told an ex-boyfriend she had been fighting with a female who was now "lying there looking funny" and Mackinnon told a friend she had been present at a flat when a "girl had been killed".
Jack, who lived at the homeless hostel where Ms Milne worked, told two female residents he had "killed Laura" with a bread knife because she had said she was glad his granddad and sister were dead.
He told them Buchan and Mackinnon had beaten Ms Milne up, then he had gone through to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and cut her throat, and had then cut her head and legs off and that her body was in a cupboard in the flat.
He later told police he had decided to cut his victim up after failed attempts to get the body into the loft.
Jack took the women to the flat, opened the letterbox and said: "Can you smell her body? She is lying in there dead."
The women alerted police, who searched the flat and found Ms Milne's decomposing body wrapped in bedding in a kitchen cupboard beside the sink.
Ms Milne was brought up by her father Brian in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and has an older brother and younger sister.

She had been diagnosed with mild learning difficulties and was living at the Stopover homeless accommodation in Aberdeen, where she was working as a volunteer in the kitchen.
Advocate depute David Young, reading out an agreed version of the events, said Laura was a "vulnerable, naive and easily manipulated" young woman.
In the days after her death, Buchan had replied six times to text messages from Ms Milne's family pretending to be her, in which he said: "I am fine I am staying with a friend and yes you will see me", said Mr Young.

Mr Milne revealed that Laura had known Debbie Buchan, who admitted her attempted murder, since school.
He said: "Laura had been bullied by her throughout her school years but she did not bear a grudge against her.
"I warned Laura to be wary of her but she just assured me that they had become friends. That was typical of Laura - the day after an argument, it would be all forgotten."
