Attack at US Istanbul consulate Attack at US Istanbul consulate
(30 minutes later)
At least three policemen have been killed in an attack near the US consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul, state media have said. Three policemen and three gunmen have been killed in an armed attack near the US consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul, its governor has said.
Television footage appeared to show four dead bodies on the ground in front of the high-walled complex in the city. The identity of the attackers is still unclear, but they are said to have begun shooting at police outside the main entrance at 1000 (0800 GMT).
CNN Turk said armed assailants had opened fire from a vehicle at the officers, who were stationed outside. The ensuing gun battle, which lasted for at least seven minutes, is reported to have left several others injured.
The US embassy in Ankara told the Reuters news agency it was aware of an incident, but gave no further details. There are no reports of any injuries to staff working in the consulate itself.
NTV reported that some bystanders who had been waiting for US visas were also injured in the attack. After the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, the consulate was moved from the centre of Istanbul to a hill on the outskirts.
It opened in 2003, and has checkpoints and barriers well away from the main building.
