The DUP has criticised the Ulster Unionist Party over its decision to force a by-election for a Fermanagh District Council seat.

The seat has been empty since the death of Nigel Dodds' father Joseph.

Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Arlene Foster insisted the UUP's decision would jeopardise the unionist seat.

"This, quite frankly, is absolute madness because I have to say it's only a political fool who says that this is a safe unionist seat," she said.

"It is not a safe unionist seat and if anybody cares to look at the figures they will see that this will be a straight fight between ourselves in the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin."
