Man, 18, charged over city murder Man in court over Shiels murder

An 18-year-old man is to be charged with the murder of Emmett Shiels at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday. An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering Emmett Shiels in Londonderry last month.
Mr Shiels, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area of Derry on 24 June. Garry Meenan from Bishop's Street in the city is also accused of a number of related firearms offences.
The 18-year-old is also charged with possession of a firearm and a number of related offences. A detective inspector told the court he believed the defendant did not fire the shots which killed Mr Shiels but was part of the gang which murdered him.
Two other males, aged 16 and 17, who were questioned about the murder have been released without charge. He said that during five days of questioning Mr Meenan consistently denied the charges.
Mr Sheils was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with a group of masked gunmen. He was remanded in custody at the hearing at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Earlier on Friday, officers working on the case carried out searches in the Fanad Drive area of Creggan. Emmett Shiels, 22, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area of Derry on 24 June.
A 16-year-old girl arrested in relation to Mr Shiels' murder has been released pending the preparation of reports for the Public Prosecution Service. He was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with a group of masked gunmen.
