Pictures of thick smoke and a damaged train car in the St. Petersburg Metro have emerged online. Witnesses say a blast occurred. There are reports of casualties. A suspected IED explosion inside a car of the St. Petersburg Metro system has resulted in casualties among passengers. The entire transit system has been shut down as bomb squads and rescuers are responding to the emergency.
A law enforcement source told TASS there was a blast at the Sennaya Square metro station. No official confirmation or casualty report was immediately available. The explosion happened as the train was travelling between the stations Tekhnologichesky Institut and Sennaya Ploshchad of the St. Petersburg Metro, the National Antiterrorism Committee confirmed, adding that there was an unspecified number of fatalities from the blast.
The local rescue services told TASS they were responding to the report of the smoke, but could not provide any detail. Preliminary reports indicate that some 10 people may have been killed and 20 injured in the blast, news agencies said citing sources close to the investigation.
At least three stations of the metro have been reportedly closed for passengers. Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged a thorough investigation.
“We are considering all possible causes, including terrorism,” he said in a statement.
All of the metro stations have been closed for passengers.
