England football star Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police investigating reports of a fight outside a nightclub in Manchester.

The 21-year-old Manchester United striker was interviewed by officers over claims that a photographer was assaulted outside a club on 15 October.

The man did not need medical treatment after an incident outside the Panacea club in the city centre.

Greater Manchester Police had said last week they planned to speak to Rooney.

A spokesman for the force said a file would be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service to make any decision on possible charges.

He said: "A 21-year-old man was interviewed today at a police station in Greater Manchester.

"He voluntarily attended and was interviewed in connection with an alleged assault on October 15.

"A file is now being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service."

The United squad trained as usual at Carrington on Friday and Rooney later spoke to police at an unidentified police station.
