Man charged over pensioner murder

A man has been charged with the murder of an 89-year-old man found badly beaten in his Tyneside home.

Pensioner Harold Lindley was discovered by neighbours with serious facial injuries after being attacked in Walker Grove, Walker, on 17 April.

He died of his injuries in hospital almost a month after the incident.

Michael Stephenson, 20, of Westbury Avenue in the city is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with murder.

He had earlier been remanded in custody charged with robbery and grievous bodily harm.

A post-mortem examination into the cause of Mr Lindley's death proved inconclusive.

Further tests have been carried out and the results are expected to be released soon.
