The recent problems with knife crime in London dominate the front page of the Daily Mail newspaper.

"Walk on by" is that paper's front page headline, as it highlights comments by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

He says that anyone who sees someone being attacked on the street should walk away, for their own safety.

The Daily Express has delivered a petition to Downing Street about the fury of middle Britain at Labour's failure to ease the burden on families.

The Independent says the UK retail sector had its very own Black Wednesday, with £1bn being knocked off the value of Marks and Spencer.

The Times says the problem for M&S is partly because middle-class shoppers are going "downmarket" to cheaper rivals, such as Primark and Aldi.

Fuel woes

The Daily Telegraph says the Bank of England warns families will see living standards fall for at least a year.

This, it says, is because of the credit crisis and the soaring oil prices.

The Daily Star highlights the threat of furious lorry drivers to "block every motorway in the country" in their battle over soaring fuel prices.

The Telegraph gives more prominence to road tax increases for older cars.

It says rebel MPs were persuaded to support the government by promising the rises would be phased in and reviewed.

But the Guardian says the government cannot afford to be seen to be succumbing to every backbench protest, at a time of tightening finances.

Elementary, Watson

This, suggests the Daily Mirror, is a defining moment for the custard cream.

The humble snack has finally made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, after 100 years as one of the nation's favourite teatime treats.

The Sun says Sacha Baron Cohen is to portray legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes in a new movie.

The Ali G actor will be pitting his wits, the paper says, against comedian Russell Brand, who will be the villain of the piece.
