Councillor resigns from Sinn Fein

A Sinn Féin councillor in Fermanagh has resigned from the party.

Bernice Swift was suspended by Sinn Féin for speaking out against the party's decision to support District Policing Partnerships.

She said: "There has been a witch-hunt conducted against me.

"I have tried to resolve my suspension and called for a transparent inquiry, however, those efforts were frustrated by some elements within Sinn Féin."

Ms Swift was suspended from the party eight months ago after she described DPPs as "meaningless talking shops with no legislative power or authority".

Sinn Féin Councillor Domhnall Ó Cobhthaigh said Ms Swift should now resign from the council.

"Bernice was elected on a Sinn Féin mandate and she should now step down from the council and allow the electors who voted for a Sinn Féin candidate based on a Sinn Féin manifesto to have their democratically expressed wishes respected through a co-option," he said.
