UK airline BMI has said it has reached a pay deal with pilots' union Balpa, averting a possible strike.

BMI - which employs 650 pilots - said that a three-year deal had been struck in principle with the union.

Balpa said disputes at each of BMI's three divisions - regional, long-haul and Bmibaby - had now been resolved.

The strike vote had been triggered by a row over decisions on pay, pensions and rotas, which pilots said had been imposed without consultation.

"It has been a lengthy period of tough negotiations but we have come up with solutions on which we will be consulting members," said Balpa general secretary Jim McAuslan.
