(35 minutes later)
The head of the Irish coastguard has said hopes of finding three missing crew from a coastguard helicopter are "fading fast". An Irish coastguard helicopter pilot has died following a crash off the coast of Mayo in the Republic of Ireland.
Four crew members were on board when they lost contact at about 01:00 local time off the coast of Mayo in the Republic of Ireland. Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was taken to hospital on Tuesday morning after she was found in a critical condition.
One of the four crew members was rescued on Tuesday morning off the west coast. The aircraft lost contact at about 01:00 local time as it was coming in to refuel during a rescue operation.
The crew member is understood to be in a critical condition. A search is continuing for her three colleagues who are still missing.
Debris has been spotted in the water and a search by two RNLI lifeboats, two Irish coastguard helicopters and several local fishing boats is focusing north of Achill Island in County Mayo. Irish coastguard search and rescue manager, Gerard O'Flynn, said Ms Fitzpatrick was the most senior pilot with CHC which runs the contract to provide search and rescue services in the Republic of Ireland.
The aircraft was providing cover for another coastguard helicopter on a mission when contact was lost. "She's been with the company for some 20 years and outside of her work as a pilot she did an enormous amount of work on water safety and was always available to do school visits and just highlight basic water safety," he said.
