Netflix has announced it will be opening an office in Mumbai.

India has emerged as one of Netflix’s largest mobile markets and the online streaming company is looking to capitalise from the new growing customer base.

The purpose of the new office is to invest in creating television and movie content for Indian consumers.

“India is hugely important for us in the long term, because it’s one of the strongest internet markets and internet TV is the future over the next 10 to 20 years, given that linear TV will decline in viewing eventually,” Reed Hastings, Netflix’s co-founder, said, according to the India Times.

“It’s a great opportunity to get in at the very beginning of internet TV, which will rise in India as phone networks as well as international players like YouTube and Netflix do more on the internet in India.

“We want to be in the top five apps on the (consumer’s) phone,” Mr Hastings added.

India is one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone markets and more than 450 million Indians are expected to be connected to the internet this year.

Last year, Amazon announced they would be investing $300m (£247m) to make original content for their Prime platform.
